Must Pack Cruise Items
5 Items You Must Pack for Your Cruise Vacation
(Even If You’re Packing Light!)
Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or an at-sea veteran, packing light for a cruise vacation is always challenging. There’s so many scenarios that cross our minds when preparing our bags. “What will the weather be like? Will I need that extra pair of slacks? Should I bring dress shoes?”
To help you with your cruise packing checklist, we’ve put together the top 5 items that are “must-haves” for an at sea escape – whether you’re traveling on a quick weekend cruise getaway or a transatlantic cruise!
ATTIRE
1. At the minimum: one poolside, daytime, and nighttime outfit
Packing light means limiting your clothing options (which is a good thing!) A rule of thumb to keep in mind is to at least bring one outfit for every activity you plan on participating in onboard your cruise ship. That means, at least one poolside outfit (swimsuit, flip-flops, hat); one daytime outfit (shorts/pants, a shirt, walking shoes); and one evening outfit (slacks/dress, a nice shirt/blouse, and nicer footwear that isn’t tennis shoes). Worst case scenario, you’ll just have to repeat outfits, which isn’t as big of a deal as not being prepared!
HEALTH
2. SPF Protection
Whether you’re taking an Alaska cruise or a cruise to Mexico, you’ll always need to keep in mind that you’re traveling at sea and any type of product with SPF protection is essential to protect you from the sun’s rays, which even during overcast can cause harsh sunburn – especially when reflecting over the ocean’s waters. From hats, to sunglasses, and sunblock, having something to protect you from the sun will ensure that you don’t have to deal with sunburn, blisters, or even getting sick from the sun while traveling at sea.
3. Over the counter medicine
You’d be surprised how easy it is to catch a cold or get sick while traveling. If you are dealing with different time zones, boarding planes, and more, it can really take a toll on your body and cause exhaustion. While onboard a cruise ship, you’re very limited with your options in cold medicine, Vitamin C supplements, and more. To ensure you have the right medicine that you would typically take at home, it doesn’t hurt to bring a small bag of your favorite over the counter medicine for colds, headaches, nausea, etc. Also, you’ll want to take precautionary steps as well and take vitamins and supplements to help boost your immune system. We guarantee if you won’t need these items during your trip, someone else will!

4. Something to keep the time
We often rely on our cell phones to help us keep track of time, and you can definitely use that during your cruise – but it’s very easy to have it get lost or wet (unless you have a waterproof phone case!). Plus, with a cell phone, you also have to remember to set your phone on airplane mode as at-sea costs for Internet and cell phone service is quite expensive. It may sound old school, but sometimes it’s just easier to wear a watch onboard your cruise ship. That way, you can keep track of time, will always have it on your wrist, and won’t have to worry about charging it!

5. Waterproof EVERYTHING!
Most importantly, if you’re traveling on a cruise vacation, you’ll be dealing with water activities galore! Whether you’re lounging poolside, embarking on an Alaskan adventure, headed to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, or taking on new adventures in Mexico, A cruise getaway is all about the water – and of course, you’ll need to bring some waterproof supplies. If you plan on taking pictures with your phone, be sure to have a waterproof phone case. Also, if you are visiting beaches, waterfalls, or even taking on ATV adventures, you’ll want a safe dry bag to keep all of your gear protected and dry from the elements. There are a variety of sizes out there – whether it’s a 10L, 20L, or larger. Even if you do plan on traveling light, don’t forget your waterproof gear that will be sure to keep your valuables dry!
